7 Tips For Planning a Successful Early Learning Art Centre

Childcare, art

In order for children to create art, they need an inspiring space.

The art centre should look like an artist's studio, filled with children's art as well as that of well-known artists. The art centre should allow children to feel creative as they explore materials to express themselves.

Here are 7 elements that are key to creating a successful art centre:

1. Furniture

Appropriate furniture will make an art centre an inviting space to work and learn. Plenty of space for supplies is key, and adding an easel or two will get those creative juices flowing. Make sure furniture is easy to clean, and don't forget storage for all those craft supplies!

2. Storage and organization

Great storage is the key to any Early Learning Art Centre's success, and getting items that serve more than one purpose adds value to the limited space you have for furniture.

3. Include lots of cleanup options

There are products that have been made to make very little mess in your room such as Kwik Stix, Do-A-Dot, and weaving products, but when things need to get messy, it is best to be as prepared as possible. Aprons are a must-have, as are No-Spill Paint Cups and Refillable Squeeze Brushes.

4. Label everything!

Labeling will give children direction both in finding supplies for their self-directed creating, as well as remind them where things go when it is time to clean up. Win-win!

5. Extend your creating space to outside!

Indoor/Outdoor easels can be used all year long so you can change up your art space as the weather permits. Fence easels are also a great resource for encouraging kids to get outdoors.

5. Incorporate natural elements

It is easy to be inspired to create when the room is full of inspiration from the natural world! Each season you can change the elements you bring in the room: in Springtime bring in some Pussy willow branches, a Summer stroll on the beach will supply you with beautiful driftwood, Fall pumpkins and gourds are colourful and fun, and winter birch or fir tree branches will add drama to any room.

 6. Rotate limited supplies

Only including a few supplies at a time will keep the art centre fresh and exciting for children. There is no need to have all supplies out at all times, as children may get overwhelmed.

7. Display their finished masterpieces!

Children will feel so proud to have their masterpieces displayed all over the room. Hang a Classroom Clothesline or utilize a See-Thru Easel as a room divider and semi-permanent art easel.
